Quality Toys and Snacks for Dogs: Why It Matters for Your Habibi Bear Puppy

Here at Habibi Bears, we love sharing the day-to-day moments that shape our lives with dogs, so you—our Habibi Bear Tribe—can enjoy a long, joyful journey with your pup. A recent experience reminded us just how important it is to be intentional when choosing quality toys and snacks for dogs, especially for our sensitive, intuitive Habibi Bear puppies.

always check labels

One of the most critical things you can do as a dog parent is to read labels carefully. This goes for both dog treats and toys, especially anything that may be imported from China. We’ve seen dried chicken jerky and even sweet potato treats cause violent vomiting—frothy, clear fluid, and sometimes even specks of blood. It’s terrifying.

Vomiting in small or medium-sized dogs is no small matter. It throws off their electrolyte balance and can disrupt kidney and bladder function. In more serious cases, toxic substances can elevate liver enzymes, which may lead to dangerous long-term health issues.

misleading labels: What “made in the usa” really means

It’s easy to be fooled by packaging. We’ve all seen treats at discount stores like Ross, Marshalls, or TJ Maxx labeled “Made in the USA.” But on closer inspection, you may find a disclaimer: the ingredients are sourced from China and only processed or assembled in the U.S.

According to the FDA, in order for a product to truly be labeled “Made in the USA,” all or virtually all ingredients must originate here. Unfortunately, deceptive marketing makes it hard for pet parents to make informed decisions.

When in doubt, choose brands that source their ingredients from countries with similar quality standards to the U.S., such as Australia, New Zealand, or Canada.

A Real Story That Hit Close to Home

One of our families recently reported that their puppy became violently ill after chewing on a toy purchased at a discount outlet. It wasn’t from a known brand, and sadly, the materials used likely included toxic compounds.

This is a reminder that puppy toys must be made with non-toxic, lead-free, PVC-free, and BPA-free materials. Puppies are mouthier than adult dogs, and everything ends up in their mouths—so what they chew on matters.

PVC and BPA are known carcinogens. If you’re not sure about a toy, try the smell test. If it has that strong chemical “plastic-y” odor, it’s likely not safe. When in doubt, toss it out.

What You Can Do to Keep Your Puppy Safe

  • Visit the brand’s website. A reputable company will list ingredient sources and safety standards clearly.

  • Do a quick search. See if the product or brand has had any recent recalls or complaints.

  • Stick with name brands. Or better yet, shop directly from our website. Visit our Shop page for a curated list of trusted products like Pawtree treats, Groov pacifiers, West Paw Toppl toys, and licky mats.

  • Avoid bargain-bin snacks and toys. Spending a little more up front can save you hundreds in vet bills—and protect your pup’s health long-term.

    What is a Habibi Bear?

The Habibi Bear is its own breed of dog, purposefully cultivated to be the best of a variety of different breeds, all selected for their unique traits and characteristics. The goal in developing the Habibi Bear was to take temperament of wonderful dogs like the cavalier, who are known for their sweet and gentle temperaments, but also known for their health concerns, and find a way, through hybridization, to great a dog who retained the cavalier temperament, but without the health concerns.
