These practical tips will help your puppy stay the coolest (and cutest) dog on the block this summer.
1. Keep Walks to Early Morning or Evening
Pavement and sidewalks can reach dangerously high temperatures in summer, easily burning a dog’s paws. Schedule walks early in the morning before surfaces heat up, or after sunset when the ground has cooled. Avoid the hours between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when heat exposure is most dangerous.
2. Protect Paws with Doggie Crocs

3. Use Cooling Mats and Elevated Beds
For dogs that overheat quickly, cooling mats can be a lifesaver. Fill them with ice water for maximum comfort. Elevated dog beds are another great option, allowing airflow underneath your dog’s body to help regulate temperature.
4. Provide Plenty of Cool, Fresh Water
Hydration is crucial in warm weather. Add ice cubes to your dog’s water bowl or make pupsicles by freezing water or homemade broth with tiny treat bits, blueberries, or mashed banana for potassium. Always ensure treats are cut small enough to prevent choking.
5. Offer Kiddie Pool Playtime
If your Habibi Bear loves water, a small wading pool is a fun way to beat the heat. Place the pool in the shade, supervise play at all times, and help smaller dogs get in and out safely.
6. Keep Fur Trimmed with Puppy Cuts
In hot climates, a neat puppy cut can help prevent overheating while still protecting your dog’s skin. Keep 1–2 inches of fur intact for insulation and sun protection. A shorter cut also makes post-swim clean-up much easier.
