A Love Letter to Dogs
We dedicate this love letter to all the dogs we have loved during our lives, who by their presence opened our hearts so that we could go on to love even more dogs.
To the dogs of our childhoods, our first dogs—whether those memories were formed in quiet homes in Seattle, Spokane, Portland, Boise, Los Angeles, or Phoenix, or in small neighborhoods anywhere life first introduced us to them. In many cases, they were our first friends. For some of us, they were our only friends. These were the dogs who let us cry into their fur when no one else understood and who sometimes were our sole comfort during those turbulent times. These dogs were by our side when others were too busy or too fickle, and they were our confidants when there were no other living beings to listen or hold our secrets. These were the dogs who kept us company or kept us warm when lonely, sick, or afraid. These were dogs who optimistically followed us in hopes of sharing a snack while no one else was looking and the dogs who we might have snuck into our rooms when the parents weren’t looking. These were the dogs who happily played the clown for us to make us laugh when we were feeling down. These dogs taught us our first lessons about real, true friendship.
To those sweet angels, thank you for being there for us and teaching us about love.
To the dogs of our young adulthoods—whether that chapter unfolded in Bellevue, Eugene, Meridian, San Diego, or Scottsdale, or in any place where life was still being figured out—thank you. Thank you to the dogs who showed us patience when we were busy with kids, especially when we were tired, overworked and frantic. The dogs who stood by our sides and grounded us without asking for anything in return. These were the dogs who watched out for us, offering us their strength and solid presence while we learned to juggle work, kids and everything in between. All those dogs who in those quiet moments offered us something steady to lean on when weary and worn out. The dogs who were gracious with our learning curve and saw the best in us when we couldn’t see it for ourselves. These dogs taught us about forgiveness and steadfastness, and about the importance of showing up.
To these faithful souls, thank you for being there and teaching us about loyalty.
To all these dogs, we humbly thank you for choosing to come into physical form and share a space with us. Thank you for the honor and privilege of being your person.
