Understanding Puppy Biting (Puppy Shark Teeth)

Here at Habibi Bears, we are constantly re-evaluating our relationship between our dogs and us, always looking to elevate to the next level. It’s an exciting time for us, everyday we discover new ways to deepen the human and canine connection. One of the tools we use is always consciously shifting the way we look at puppy behaviors and discern the motivation behind their actions.

We frequently get queries about our beloved Habibi Bear pup’s during  “puppy biting phase”, or “baby shark phase.” No matter what you call it, we would like to invite you to rethink this time in your Habibi Bear puppy’s life as “Puppy Exploratory Phase.”

When You Don’t Have Hands

Imagine how you would get through your day if your hands were tied behind your back. How would you open things? How would you pick things up? How could you move things from point A to point B? Chances are, you more than likely would use your mouth. How many times have you had your hands full and picked up a sweater or jacket with your teeth? Well, our Habibi Bear puppies don’t have hands, and in order to explore and learn about their world, they use their mouths. Puppies are babies after all, and babies are hard-wired to find out everything they can about their world so they can learn their place in it. Your Habibi Bear puppy is no different.

When we add the canine super-power of smell (and those 100 + million smell receptors) , it is no wonder puppies literally have their mouths on everything for a period of time, they are discovering and decoding the world with their tongues and teeth. The information gets stored in their tiny puppy brains for future reference.

If I chew on that long funny smelling thing that comes out from the wall, my mouth gets hot (electric cord).

When I gnaw on those soft things that smell like Mom or Dad, I get yelled at (shoes and slippers).

The corner of the table feels really good on my new teeth (furniture), but when I do, I get a time-out.

Our puppies aren’t trying to be naughty or be a nuisance, they are being babies on an educational mission.

Good news about discovery phases

Your Habibi Bear puppy will pass through various phases in their “mouthy” adventures, and they will get through it with a little patience, preparation and understanding.

Let’s try to always remember that puppies are babies. When we can bring our focus back to that very real fact, it can be a real help to us in shifting perspective from one of frustration to one of compassionate understanding. Puppies are babies. They are not being naughty or challenging on purpose, they are learning to navigate in a new environment. Puppies are babies. Their brains are still developing. Puppies are babies. Just as we have patience for a 12 week old infant, we can have the same compassion for the canine baby in your new home who can be confused easily. Puppies are babies and they grow quickly and move to the next phase.

What is a Habibi Bear?

The Habibi Bear is its own breed of dog, purposefully cultivated to be the best of a variety of different breeds, all selected for their unique traits and characteristics. The goal in developing the Habibi Bear was to take temperament of wonderful dogs like the cavalier, who are known for their sweet and gentle temperaments, but also known for their health concerns, and find a way, through hybridization, to great a dog who retained the cavalier temperament, but without the health concerns.
