At Habibi Bears™, we’re committed to providing ongoing education to help our families raise happy, healthy pups. Recently, a concerned family reached out after their dog required multiple tooth extractions—a situation that sparked an important conversation about dental care and some common misconceptions.

One key takeaway? Just like us, dogs need their teeth cleaned—through regular brushing, professional dental care when needed, and a healthy, species-appropriate diet. While it’s true that small-breed owners need to be mindful of dental care (since smaller mouths can lead to crowding and quicker plaque buildup), the reality is that all dogs—no matter their size—require consistent dental care to maintain lifelong health.

The Importance of Dental Care for All Dogs

It’s a common misconception that dental problems are exclusive to small breeds. While smaller dogs can be more susceptible due to the compact nature of their mouths, all dogs are at risk for dental disease if proper care isn’t maintained.  Neglecting dental hygiene can lead to plaque buildup, tartar formation, and eventually periodontal disease, which can cause pain, tooth loss, and even systemic health issues affecting the heart and kidneys.

Ask any veterinary practice, and they will tell you they see dogs of all breeds and sizes needing teeth cleaning and extractions.  But there is a little secret I want to share that will help your dog’s teeth from needing to be pulled….

Tips for Maintaining Your Habibi Bear’s Dental Health

1. Start Early with Desensitization

Begin dental care routines while your Habibi Bear is still a puppy. Gently handle their mouth, touch their gums, and introduce a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. This early desensitization helps them become comfortable with regular brushing.

2. Incorporate Raw Meaty Bones

Feeding raw meaty bones can be an effective way to reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Suitable options include:

  • Chicken necks and wings

  • Turkey necks

  • Lamb ribs

These bones are softer and safer for dogs to chew, helping to naturally clean their teeth. It’s recommended to offer raw bones 1-2 times per week, always under supervision.

Important: Never feed cooked bones, as they can splinter and cause serious health issues.

3. Use Enzyme-Enhanced Water Additives

Adding enzyme-enhanced solutions to your dog’s water can help prevent harmful biofilm buildup, slowing down tartar formation. Ensure the product is free from xylitol, alcohol, and chlorhexidine, and is both odorless and colorless. Remember, this is a supplement to brushing, not a replacement.

4. Provide a Balanced, Low-Carbohydrate Diet

Feeding your Habibi Bear a high-quality, low-carbohydrate raw diet, like Viva Raw,  can significantly impact their dental health. Diets high in carbohydrates can lead to increased plaque and tartar. Consider incorporating raw feeding practices, which align with a dog’s natural dietary needs and can promote better oral health.

It’s Never Too Late to Start

If you’ve fallen behind on your Habibi Bear’s dental care, don’t worry—it’s never too late to begin. Establishing a consistent routine now can prevent future issues and contribute to your dog’s overall well-being.

Julie’s Experience

I’ve lived with a LOT of dogs in my life. And one thing we don’t have is dogs needing their teeth pulled due to decay. I learned decades ago a simple trick to keep their teeth in tip-top shape: raw bones.

I feed my dogs raw chicken necks and wings, quail, and rabbit—and their teeth stay sparkling white and clean. Their breath is naturally fresh, and no, we don’t rely on those breath-freshening chews like Greenies.

Raw bones are truly nature’s toothbrush. Not only are they incredibly healthy for our dogs, but they bring so much joy. Dogs get to do what they’re naturally wired to do—rip, tear, and chew to their heart’s content. This activity provides excellent enrichment, keeps them calm and happy, and yes—their breath smells great too.

An added bonus? For puppies with stubborn baby teeth, chewing raw bones can help those retained puppy teeth fall out more easily, setting them up for a lifetime of good dental health.

What is a Habibi Bear?

The Habibi Bear is its own breed of dog, purposefully cultivated to be the best of a variety of different breeds, all selected for their unique traits and characteristics. The goal in developing the Habibi Bear was to take temperament of wonderful dogs like the cavalier, who are known for their sweet and gentle temperaments, but also known for their health concerns, and find a way, through hybridization, to great a dog who retained the cavalier temperament, but without the health concerns.
