#108 – 7 Common Puppy Behavioral Training Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Embarking on the journey of puppy training can feel like navigating a minefield. Mistakes are easily made but fear not; we’re here to light the path to a well-behaved furry friend.

1. Starting Training Too Late

The myth that puppies can’t learn before a certain age has led many owners astray. The truth is, training should start the moment your furry bundle of joy sets paw into your home. Early training not only capitalizes on your puppy’s sponge-like learning ability but also sets the stage for a well-behaved adult dog. Establishing simple commands, house rules, and boundaries from day one can prevent a plethora of behavioral issues down the line.

2. Neglecting Socialization

Many new puppy owners overlook the critical window for socialization, which is typically before 16 weeks of age. Socialization involves exposing your puppy to various people, pets, environments, and experiences in a sequential and carefully managed process. Many folks mis-handle this process by thinking it just means to simply say ‘hi’ to as many people and dogs as possible.  This can max out a young puppy and it is so much more than that.  In our Human’s Guide to the dog Galaxy Course, we have an entire protocol that will help you set your puppy up for success. This foundational step is crucial for developing a confident, well-adjusted dog that is comfortable in various situations. Mishandled socialization can lead to fear, aggression, and anxiety.

3. Using Negative Reinforcement

A common trap that many fall into is using negative reinforcement or punishment as primary training methods. This approach not only harms the bond between you and your puppy but can also lead to fear-based behavior issues. Positive reinforcement, such as treats, praise, and play, is not only more humane but far more effective. It encourages your puppy to learn and repeat desired behaviors because they associate them with positive outcomes.

Understanding the difference between positive reinforcement and bribing is essential. Using treats to encourage behavior is effective, but they should gradually be replaced with verbal praise and affection to ensure your puppy obeys even when you don’t have a treat in hand.

4. Skipping Consistency in Commands

Consistency is king in the realm of puppy training. Using different commands for the same action or varying the rules can confuse your puppy, making it harder for them to understand what you expect from them. Ensure everyone in your household is on the same page regarding commands, rules, and boundaries. It’s not just about the words; it’s about ensuring the behavioral expectations are constant, providing a stable learning environment for your puppy.

5. Overlooking Rewarding Good Behavior

In the eagerness to correct unwanted behaviors, it’s easy to forget to acknowledge the good. Rewarding good behavior is an essential part of positive reinforcement, encouraging your puppy to repeat those behaviors. Be observant and ready to praise or treat your puppy not just for following a command but also for any naturally good behavior, such as settling down quietly or choosing a toy over your shoe.

6. Failing to Address Biting and Nipping

Biting and nipping are natural behaviors for puppies, especially when teething. However, failing to address these behaviors appropriately can lead to problems as your puppy grows. Understanding the developmental biting phases and how to handle them is crucial in management of this phase.  Teaching ‘bite inhibition,’ the ability to control the force of their mouth, is crucial from an early age. This can be done through redirecting their biting to appropriate toys or using time-outs to show that biting ends playtime. It’s important to handle this gently but firmly to avoid instilling fear or aggression.  We have a complete biting deep dive in our Human’s Guide to the Dog Galaxy course!

7. Ignoring the Need for Professional Help

What is a Habibi Bear?

The Habibi Bear is its own breed of dog, purposefully cultivated to be the best of a variety of different breeds, all selected for their unique traits and characteristics. The goal in developing the Habibi Bear was to take temperament of wonderful dogs like the cavalier, who are known for their sweet and gentle temperaments, but also known for their health concerns, and find a way, through hybridization, to great a dog who retained the cavalier temperament, but without the health concerns.
