In the recent newsletter (April 19) we were sharing all the wonderful developments here in Habibi-land in regards to the Pup Start training program, where our team is having phenomenal success with giving your precious pup the jump they need to be a Puppy All-Star!
If you haven’t read up on our amazing program, I strongly encourage you to check it out, especially if you want to deepen your relationship with your Habibi Bear guy or gal.
Pup Start is an awesome, bond building model of conditioning that is pup-led, meaning we go at the puppy’s own pace. This is crucial to the development of a calmer, more secure dog down the road. Pup Start takes “name it-reward it” to a whole other level, making use of a little handy device called a “clicker” to mark exactly when your pup is doing something positive.
Clicker “Training”* is an amazing tool to have for a few reasons:
- Uses positive reinforcement. We can catch those moments of good behavior and …
- Communicate(s) exact moment pup offers your request
- The unique sound of the clicker is very precise and consistent. A few times of hearing that sounds will indicate to your Habibi Bear pup that good things (the reward) is on its way.
- Easy to use in conjunction with “name it-reward it”.
- Clickers are less than $5 and available at all pet stores.
We know that puppies and dogs respond better to positive reinforcement rather than compulsion (physically demanding a behavior) or aversion (using something unpleasant to deter a behavior) methods. Using a clicker to communicate to puppy how wonderful they are doing builds their confidence and encourages them to seek out more praise or “clicks” once the connection between Click=Reward=I’m the bestest boi/bestest girl is established. You are helping your dog model the behavior you want, and once again, the clear communication that you two share is invaluable and deepen your love for each other.
