We absolutely love, love, love, LOVE our dogs, and if you’re reading this, chances are you do too. What’s not to love? Cuddly, loving, silly, devoted and loyal – all the perfect qualities in a loving companion! Whether this is your first time in the puppy rodeo or your fifth, having a dog changes and touches your heart in all the right ways.
How can we make sure this is an equal energy exchange for our beloved Habibi Bear pups, and not one that puts the strain on them?
Here are some suggestions and recommendations:
- Know what type of puppy personality is the right fit for your family: Know your family’s strengths and limitations when it comes to choosing a puppy. Everyone wants a sensitive (or social butterfly) pup until it is time to do some adjusting or revisiting of basic puppy rules and routine scheduling. Then the quality you chose becomes an issue. Make sure if you have a busy household that you have a dog who is well-suited and easy-going who can roll with the doggy punches. That requires self knowledge and honest reflection on your part.
- Know what expectations are realistic when you bring a puppy home: Know how long it will take for puppy to become acclimated to your home, know the lay of the land, and how long it takes for a dog to settle in. (Keep it 100 – January 4 blogpost, Chill Out! )
- Know your puppy’s love language: Know whether your dog is motivated by food, play, toys or praise, and reward your pup accordingly. (Doggie Love Language )
